The Tests

There are two tests that you have to take in order to obtain a full driving licence.

The Theory Test

This is split into 2 different parts. Both parts are computer based.

The first part involves you sitting a multiple choice exam based on the highway code. You will be shown a question and given 4 possible answers.  If you are not sure of the answer you have the option to return to the question at the end of the exam.  You will be asked 50 questions and in order to pass you must get a minimum of 43 correct. The time limit for this part is 57minutes.

The second part is a hazard perception test which lasts for approximately 15 minutes. You will be presented with a series of 14 video clips which feature every day road scenes, in each clip there will be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards. In order to score you must click the mouse when you see the developing hazard.  If  you click too often while watching the clip or your clicking forms a pattern then you will not be awarded any points for that particular clip.  At the end of the clip a pop-up box will appear informing you that you have scored zero. In order to pass  you need to score at least 44 out of a possible 75.

The theory test costs £31.00.

The Practical Test

You must also take a Practical test lasting approximately 40 minutes.

Before you leave the test centre you will be asked to read a number plate from a distance of approximately 67 feet. If you get this wrong or are unable to read it the examiner will  pick a different car and take an exact measurement from which you need to read the plate number, if you still get it wrong or are unable to read it the test will be abandoned and you will be deemed to have failed.  Once you have passed the eyesight check you will be asked 2 practical questions relating to the maintenance of your car, if you fail to get either or both correct  you will be given a driver fault.

You will then be required to complete a test route chosen by the examiner, which will include at least 2 manoeuvres out of a possible 4:

-Turn-in-the-Road

- Bay Park

- Parallel Park

- Left reverse around a corner

You may also be asked to complete an emergency stop.

The test route will include a variety of road types and speed limits. You may be asked to pull over and stop several times and to move away from stationary on an uphill road. During the test the examiner will be watching you carefully and keeping a note of any minor driving faults. These are errors that do not in themselves create an actual or potential danger to other road users however they are recorded on the examiner's test form and if you make 16 or more of these driving faults (including any you received for the car maintenance questions) you will fail the test. You will also fail if you make a serious or dangerous error. At the end of the test the examiner will inform you whether you have passed or failed and if you have failed they will explain where you went wrong.

The practical test cost varies with the day and time you take the test. On a weekday during the day the test costs £62.00, at the weekend or on a weekday in the evening its £75.00.
